Gallery Pioneers Educational Program for Local Artists

Through its ground-breaking Artist Leadership Program, Al-Bareh Gallery has expanded its mission to include not only exhibiting great art but also developing great artists. Conceived by Al-Bareh founder Hayfa Aljishi and sponsored by Tamkeen and the Economic Development Board of Bahrain, the program aims to further the education of young Bahraini artists.

Given the local absence of both art school and a strong tradition of criticism, most are self-taught and lack access to the resources available to their artist peers elsewhere. To fill in these gaps, a curator-in-residence conducted workshops for thirty local artist. Two exhibitions of their works followed, with others to come.

Al-Bareh, one of the first modern art museums in the Gulf, aims to re-invent the function of an established art gallery for both artists and the general public and is currently planning a second edition for 2014 that will build on the foundation laid this year.
