A cleaner, greener Amman: that is the goal of the Jordanian Environmental Society’s pioneering recycling program. And with the help of ever more Jordanians, JES acheives it daily, collecting 1.5 tons of paper, plastic, and metal waste from across Amman.
As the first such recycling project in Jordan, physical collection of sorted waste is coupled with educational campaigns to spread awareness of how recycling helps to preserve resources and ease pressure on landfills. The program has grown tremendously since it began in 1995, and continues to expand its collection areas in cooperation with the municipality and the Ministry of the Environment.
The amount of waste paper collected has increased by over 160 percent, from three to 500 tons annually, while the use of recycled paper has doubled. And the number of collection sites is now 300. For its efficacy, the program has won widespread recognition from the Arab League, the Ford Motor Company, and the king of Jordan himself.
