Equalizing Opportunities for Living, Learning

Out of a child’s sobbing, the late Ghassan Kanafani famously wrote, “a distant homeland was being born again…in the heart of another child.” Two years after the man of letters was martyred, the Ghassan Kanafani Cultural Foundation was established to facilitate the birth of a better world in which all Palestinian children have “the right to learn, live with dignity and explore all their potentials.”

The GKCF serves over 600 children through six kindergartens, three libraries and art centers, three youth clubs, and two centers for children and youth with disabilities, to empower the latter “to participate more effectively in society“. One such preschool in Beirut’s Mar Elias Camp includes an occupational therapy workshop that creates aids for special needs children from across Lebanon. The center also publishes Ghassan Kanafani’s literary works in multiple languages and supports, through cultural events and teacher training, the development of Palestinians’ freedom of expression.
