Brightening the Future of Energy

In the face of rising fuel and electricity costs, Greenpeace Jordan is backing a resiliently green vision of the country’s future energy production. By 2050, renewable energy resources – particularly solar – could feasibly cover 100% of  Jordan’s energy needs — while saving $12 billion in today’s terms. In contrast, a proposed nuclear reactor would be quite costly, since Jordan lacks cooling water and an adequate electrical grid. Greenpeace is therefore advocating for the development of these green energy sources–and disengagement from the nuclear program.

An online petition calling for the latter has so far gathered over 15,000 signatures, and it is also lobbying parliament members, whose lower house voted in May 2012 to delay breaking ground on the nuclear reactor project pending further study. Lectures, street theater and country-wide protests have also helped raise awareness of Jordan’s vital opportunity to become energy self-sufficient by relying on its own renewable resources.
