Widening Students’ Horizons

Each year, the Lebanese National Committee for United World College combs through public and private schools to find exceptional students aged 16 – 18 with the courage to step outside their comfort zone.

Competition for a place at one of UWC’s 12 schools is stiff; students must have the maturity to represent Lebanon to peers from 149 countries. But for those who pass the selection process, involving not only interviews but activities on diversity and identity, UWC’s two-year International Baccalaureate program provides a rigorous academic gateway set in a uniquely multi-cultural environment.

“UWC taught me to empathize with others and understand where they came from, while working collaboratively to solve the complex issues,” recalls Maysa Mourad, a UWC graduate from north Lebanon who has creatively repatriated her experiences abroad. Besides serving on the UWC’s Lebanese committee, Mourad now develops educational models and experiential activities that promote inter-communal learning.
