Breathing Warmth Into Their Hearts

In the midst of a deadly storm, Muna Hareb is sparing no effort to keep families in Jordan’s Zaatari Refugee Camp warm. Through her Breathing Numbers blanket campaign, 1,213 blankets and 200 heaters were distributed to Syrian refugees living in extremely harsh weather conditions.

“It’s the most direct help you can give people” says Nina, an active volunteer from Breathing Numbers.

From November 28 onto December 4, to mark UAE’s National Day, 13 people based in the UAE and a photographer from the US put in time in the cold to “share the warmth of the UAE with the refugees” – and show that humanity and empathy can make a difference in the bitterest of situations.

The aid came in the nick of time, with snowstorm Alexa arriving to Jordan on December 11th and pushing temperatures in some areas below freezing. Hareb, the campaign’s mastermind, is a communications specialist who describes herself as “a non-writer, non-photographer, non-moviemaker”: one who is, nevertheless, currently producing a documentary about the lives of the Syrian refugees in Jordan. The mission of this nonpareil provider? To tell their stories, raise awareness, and share hope.
