Gaza Flips the Ice Bucket Challenge With a Witty Message

A Palestinian man in Gaza wants to join the Ice Bucket Challenge but he can’t: the decisive moment he is going to splash the water on himself, there is not even a drop. “Whoops,” he says in a Youtube video he posted last Thursday.

In the last month, “hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are living, and are still living, through a water crisis” as a result of the occupation, he explains as he gives the viral charity challenge an unexpected turn.

Originated as a campaign to raise awareness about the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ASL) disease, the challenge has already generated 1.2 million videos, according to The New York Times, including celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Bill Gates, Jennifer Lopez and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last week, our own BarakaBits founder Rama Chakaki took on the challenge on this Facebook video, in a pledge for education in Syria and supporting Jusoor. As the Middle East gives its own flavor to the ice cubes on the bucket, what will you pledge for?
