Egypt’s El-Shorbagy Wins US Open Squash and Rises to World #1

Egyptian champion Mohamed El-Shorbagy and Malaysian winner Nicol David

It was a though final at the US Open last Saturday 18, as two Egyptian squash players battled for the US Open cup. As the match came to an end, Mohamed El-Shorbagy defeated fellow countryman Amr Shabana, claiming his 199th victory on the PSA World Tour, which lifted him to the top of the world ranking for the first time.

“I had a tough draw to get to the final, I had to beat Gregory Gaultier and a legend like Amr Shabana to win, so not only did I get to number one, I feel like I have proved it as well,” said the 23-year-old champion, who will head to the 2014 Qatar Championship in three weeks.

In the female competition, another Egyptian talent, Nour El-Sherbini, surprised the squash world at Drexel University in Philadelphia, as she reached the finals for the first time. The Egyptian teenager came second after being defeated by Malaysian Nicol David, who won her third US Open title in a row.
