Portrait of a Yemeni Woman

This photograph was taken in Taiz city in Yemen. In a traditional society like Yemen, women reject the idea of being photographed. For the majority of Yemeni women photography is about exposing and revealing, and that is certainly not welcomed. Therefore, I find it difficult to photograph women in streets and are practicing their daily life. This woman was the first Yemeni woman who came to me and requested me to take her photo. When I asked her if this would be actually an ok thing for me to do, she said ” Absolutely, since when woman’s face was something to be ashamed of.” That was very powerful for me!
