Architects Make a Stand for Life-Supporting Building

Architecture in harmony with its environment: this is the mission of ShamsArd Design Studio. Its success is visible in the curves of Moon Cocoon, a private house in Jericho built with earth bag construction, a revival of the 10,000-year-old tradition of earth building that had been eclipsed by concrete. The goal? As always, “to find local, natural alternative building materials and techniques that save energy, produce zero waste, and empower the local economy in the construction process,” explains architect and studio co-founder Danna Masad.

ShamsArd was established last year by architects “who realized that our profession is increasing our dependence on the colonial system we’re living under, depleting our natural resources, hurting our local economy and creating unhealthy living spaces. We decided this doesn’t have to be the only way for us to practice,” Masad says. Indeed: they now produce natural buildings, regenerative landscapes, and playful furniture made of construction waste.
