The veteran Lebanese arts association Ashkal Alwan is gearing up to support another crop of promising filmmakers through its Video Works program. This juried screening program is but one of the many projects that the non-profit association fosters.

In its nearly two decades of art activism, Ashkal Alwan has supported interdisciplinary works ranging from literary treatises to artist books, along with numerous residencies and workshops. Since its opening in 2011, the association’s huge Home Workspace in Beirut’s industrial district of Jisr el Wati has hosted lectures, discussions and critiques, as well as video production and editing studios and a multimedia contemporary art library—a first for Lebanon.

Barrier-breaking dialogue, a central pillar of the association’s commitments, is not always easy in a society fraught with political rifts. But by deepening its roots in local communities and bringing marginalized artists to the fore, Ashkal Alwan aims to nurture and empower artists and art lovers to grow together.
