Shielding Underage Refugees from Further Violence

Amera empowers Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees to overcome their traumas. Kidnapping and torture of these refugees is increasing in Sinai, with nearly half the victims under age 18. Traffickers often abuse their refugee captives in order to extort money from their relatives.

Amera’s Unaccompanied Children and Youth Team enables survivors who have escaped and made it to Cairo to get the legal and psycho-social support they need to recover, helping them access legal, educational, and health services and occupational and cultural training.

In the face of growing xenophobia, Amera also advocates for greater protection and rights for this extremely vulnerable group. Since June of this year, Ethiopians and other Africans have suffered numerous attacks and evictions as part of a violent public reaction to a perceived water crisis spurred by Ethiopian dam policies.

Through policy-shaping and education, Amera encourages Egyptians to let their traditional hospitality win out over discrimination.
