The Restoration of Sanayeh Park

Green spaces are sparse in major cities, which is why it is important to conserve them any chance we get. Azadea Foundation is doing just that by renovating Rene Mouawed Sanayeh Park in the heart of Beirut.

A few years back, a proposed project to turn Sanayeh Park into a parking garage was swiftly laid to rest as people all over Lebanon adamantly refused to allow anyone to demolish one of last green spaces in Beirut.

Azadea Foundation began the restoration of the beloved park in July 2013, in collaboration with the Municipality of Beirut. The garden, which spans 22,000 sqm, will be revived into a a public space that will offer many outdoor amenities, while maintaining its greenery.

The project aims to provide children’s playgrounds, bicycle and running tracks, an ampitheater, wall of fame, exhibition area for artists, a beautiful fountain, reading areas, and promenade lanes.

Azadea Foundation is completely funding this renovation (designed by ZMK Landscape Architects), which is scheduled to be completed 18 months.

Azadea is one of the few NGO’s dedicated to not only improving the park, but also maintaining the garden and making sure it is properly managed after its completion.
