Defending their Freedom, Deliciously

Abu Omar and his family are winning freedom for Syrians’ one meal at a time. Since 2012, this large family has refused all charity; instead, they are living out their declaration of financial independence that they are “producers not refugees” by selling delicious homemade Syrian food to Egyptians.

The project was born out of necessity: Abu Omar was on the brink of eviction when he had the idea to market Syrian food via Facebook. His first order, for pizza and sweets, came immediately, and since then the family has become famous for its cuisine.

Everyone works together: Abu Omar’s two wives cook meals, their daughters make desserts, Omar makes deliveries via motorbike, and his smaller siblings bring supplies from the market. The income keeps the children in school, and Omar and his sister make money on the side by fixing computers and cell phones.

We are not objects of charity,” Um Omar says. “Our goals are to be self-sufficient and to help Syrian families as much as possible.”
