Divers Donate an Underwater Cleanse

Bubbles Club for Divers strives to make Lebanese waters a world-class diving haven, and to spread love and respect for Earth’s marine environments. On September 14 at La Rochelle Amchit, the club held its annual Underwater Cleanup Day in cooperation with Xiphias Diving Club. While 15 scuba divers buddied up to scour the seabed, many non-diver friends donned swimming goggles to clean the shallower waters.

We divers are ambassadors and advocates of the underwater environment and, unfortunately, in Lebanon we have a lot to do,” explains George Assaf, founder and owner of Bubbles. “We are facing the challenge of changing a culture, which considers throwing trash in the sea is something normal.” There is even a proverb that supports this, he points out: “Do well and throw it in the sea”.

So Assaf and other environmentalists are founding Bubbles NGO, to protect and promote Lebanon’s marine and coastal environments, and to put them squarely at the center of the international diving map.
