Platform for Arab Youth to Debate

Young Arab Voices (YAV) was born from the uprisings that swept the Arabic-speaking world in 2011. The British Council, the Anna Lindh Foundation, and the Arab Partnership Initiative teamed up to create a platform for Arab youth to voice their opinions and participate in productive debates.

Since the program’s inception, debate teams have sprouted across the region in schools and universities. The goal, through practicing debate, is to encourage Arab youth to participate and help build democratic and pluralistic societies.

YAV will host a week that will include seminars, workshops, dialogues, and a mini-debate tournament in London from October 21 to 25. They are accepting nominees for the debate until September 5. Past debate topics include the impacts of Sharia law on women’s rights, whether Egyptians should give up democratization for the sake of economic growth, and whether sexual harassment is a culture or an instinct.
