Art for Children’s Sakes

Though the imagination might seem powerless in the face of hunger, cold and loss, an ongoing arts initiative is channeling creative power to achieve real alleviation of suffering. Syri-Arts Beirut aims to turn the world’s “blind eye” back onto the Syrian conflict, which has caused over 2,000,000 Syrians to flee their country, at least half whom are children.

Curated by Dr. Kathy Battista, director of contemporary art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, SAB is auctioning off 149 artworks donated by stellar Arab and international artists, with all proceeds going to provide food, clothing and medicine for refugee children in Lebanon, which hosts the largest number of refugees. Online bidding started on October 20 via PADDLE8.com, and will culminate in a live auction in the Beirut Exhibition Center on November 8. The event is organized in collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Social Affairs, UNICEF, Save The Children, Action Against Hunger, SyriArt Paris, Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA), and the BEC.
