Housewives with Skills

Inspired by his mother’s having overcome unfortunate circumstances and driven a fashion design and tailoring home business into success, Saeed Omar launched Sitat Byoot in 2011 as a website to help other Arab craftswomen (like his mother) “promote, sell and deliver their handmade products worldwide.” This online marketplace “serves as a community for like-minded crafty-women to discuss things of concern and interest, and a platform for them to upload the photos and details of their products to be promoted and sold,” Omar explains. In a little over a year, they were able to successfully get 10 NGOs on board, grow to 5,000 members, have 1000s of products come and go, and hope to see 100,000 vendors join their new website by the end of the year. Bound to change the lives of many of skilled housewives of the region, this online marketplace came at an opportune time to give them the acknowledgement they most certainly deserve.
