Not Just Another Nursery

Being the first carbon-neutral school in the UAE puts The Blossom Nursery on the map as a leader in sustainable practices. After being the first runner-up for the 2012 Arabia Corporate Social Responsibility Awards, the organization won this year in the small business category – a very impressive path!

Closely following the United Nations Global Compact guidelines, Blossom incorporated many eco-friendly features including “LED lighting, thermal coating on roofs, lined windows, filtered water directly piped into coolers to reduce plastic waste, natural materials to clean with and adding community recycling areas,” says Alissa Bolan, communications director at the nursery.

Blossom is committed to making its spaces green by planting trees and grass in play areas and involving children in gardening, recycling, reducing and repurposing waste. Its staff also created different structures within their premises from recycled and repurposed materials, most recently an outdoor fence made out of recycled water bottles in their newest location.

Through adopting a holistic approach to education “with an equal emphasis on people, prosperity and planet,” other organizations should follow in their light footsteps and build on their successes.
