Reducing Food Waste And Hunger

For children whose families can barely afford bread, education offers the chance of a more prosperous future. But for those attending classes with empty stomachs, hunger is yet another obstacle to learning. To alleviate their pangs, the Egyptian Food Bank is building kitchens in schools serving underprivileged children, along with implementing other programs that fight illiteracy and hunger together.

The ESB built its first school kitchen in 2010, in the Salam School, where it continues to provide over 1,000 students with nutritious meals, and it plans to construct five more kitchens soon. In partnership with Ishraq, it also gives food packages to girls who have dropped out of school while trying to convince them of their importance in building their society’s future. And to create more equitable food distribution, the EFB is cooperating with the Egyptian Hotels Association to give untouched food from hotel events and restaurant buffets to the needy in surrounding neighborhoods.
