Where Having Fun is Serious Business

“Quit clowning around!” teachers often say. But at Outa Hamra, or Red Tomato, that’s exactly what they want you to do. An initiative dedicated to making people laugh, Outa Hamra is a street clowning collective that aims to empower the underprivileged through workshops and public performances in Egypt.

Outa Hamra is currently collaborating with Save the Children Egypt in conducting a 5-month workshop at juvenile correctional facility Dar al-Tarbiya in Giza that includes a group of 30 men between the ages of 15 and 20. By the end of the workshop, the young men will have written a play to perform live. Outa Hamra will also write up a training manual for them.
