Guiding Youth Back on Track

Within Zaatari refugee camp, Questscope is working to reduce violence and smooth the rough road ahead of Syrians “who are among the most influential for Syria’s future”. These are at-risk young men, ages 14 – 24, who besides being “among the most underserved populations in the camp…face constant stereotyping [as] ‘troublemakers,’ ‘delinquents’ etc.,” explains Questscope’s Mike Niconchuck. Violence in the camp has increased recently, with illicit activities taking root “in a landscape of limited economic options and few to no meaningful roles offered to young men in particular.”

So over the next six months, Questscope will provide goal-oriented activities for 400 vulnerable young men, along with improving the capacities of volunteers and agencies to integrate and support them. After all, Niconchuk points out, these youths’ “social, psychological, and spiritual formation in these difficult times” will greatly shape “the Syria, Jordan, and Middle East we will see in 10, 20, 30 years.”
