Restoring Lost Chances to Learn

The Madrasati, or “my school”, initiative launched by Queen Rania in 2008 is now working with Syrian children in 21 host communities across Jordan. Its mission remains to brighten young refugees’ educational opportunities, just as it has those of Jordanian children in 500 underprivileged public schools. In the past, this has meant bolstering everything from the physical upkeep of schools to the competencies of teachers, by providing them with computer literacy training.

For Syrians, the most crucial support Madrasati can offer is catching students up on the education that has been interrupted by war. To that end, in partnership with UNICEF, the organization is offering remedial education to Syrian as well as Jordanian youth–7,429 to date. Over 3,700 Syrians, half of them girls, have attended these courses and according to test scores, 70 percent of students in all grades showed improvements in the subjects taught, with exceptional progress made in Arabic and English.
