Asking For Fair Sharing

A mission to care for the Earth and its environment is what unites Friends of the Earth, Middle East. With offices in Amman, Bethlehem and Tel Aviv, FoEME members work together to promote efforts to care for their shared natural heritage.

They also support the Palestinian call for UN recognition of a Palestinian state in peaceful coexistence with Israel, an important position in their work for equal and fair water usage between Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians.

Among FoME’s most recent achievements is the free flow of water in the Jordan River. The group has successfully lobbied the Israeli Water Authority to pump water regularly from Lake Kinneret to the southern Jordan River to ecologically rehabilitate the area.

To convey the importance of such equitable distribution of shared resources to a global audience, FoME’s film on water, “Good Water Neighbors”, toured the US this fall. Meanwhile, members are now  awaiting a court decision on a petition to stop construction of the separation wall through Battir, a cultural heritage site which the wall would destroy. Last May, the court ordered a halt to construction activity at the site and is scheduled to give its final decision on January 29.
