Give Them Five

Five of any unit of currency in the world: that’s how much the “Five” Campaign is asking each person to donate to help displaced survivors get through another winter in Syria. Whether it’s five US dollars or five Egyptian pounds, the initiative’s masterminds Saud Imad Eddin and Byabars Manjunah are framing their request as a human-scale way to provide money and warm clothes for Syrians.

Their work is inspired by their late uncle, Ghassan Sultana, founder the Revolutionary Movement of the Syrian People, whose work they intend to carry on and which represents “every Syrian who goes into the street to demonstrate against the tyrant.” According to Manjunah, its “Five” initiative, first established in Aleppo, now has delegates in the US, Australia, Lebanon, Egypt, the UAE, and Tunisia.

We won’t forget those who help us and wipe our tears with their kind, peaceful hands,” he adds, “and we will pay back our debts when we achieve victory.”
