Fourth Time’s the Charm for Singer-Songwriter

Ala Ghawas & Likwid

With the release of his fourth studio album, “Armor”, Bahraini indie singer-songwriter Ala Ghawas is finally achieving wider commercial recognition of his scintillating sounds. The album, produced in collaboration with Bahraini band Likwid, was the best-selling album at Bahrain’s Virgin Megastore in the last week of January, and Likwid and Ghawas celebrated its launch by giving a free concert at the Bahrain Fort and Museum on January 30.

The large audience was unanimous in its vocal appreciation of Ghawas’ music, a crooning mix of ballads and sashaying jazz inflections, with a new focus on piano and orchestral strings. One fan named Ali declared, “Bahrain is very proud to have such musical talent in its community.”

Ghawas has previously released three solo albums, Hums, Whispers, and Scream, plus a live album, “Live in Muharraq” in 2009. For its part, Likwid, which formerly called itself “La Movida”, has been playing shows in Bahrain for the last ten years, in the process becoming one of the country’s most renowned and respected bands. Even Ghawas confessed—with a great deal of happy pride–that it had “taken him three albums to finally get noticed” by them. The result is an exhilarating fusion of harmonies.
