Meet The Peacebuilding Globetrotters

“We start our performance. Drumbeats fill the air. Together we create a silent picture of a family, which breaks down more and more because of the problems of this troubled, beautiful country. Everybody is involved“.

With such dazzling performances, German collective Fannannya roams the streets of Cairo–and other cities around the world–teaching passersby how to deal peacefully with conflict through a most unusual tool: street theater.

“We spent the last two years traveling around countries in Europe and Africa, hitchhiking and playing street music to finance our lives. The first time we arrived to Egypt, the street harassment shocked us. We had never experienced such a level of harassment before, so we started performing about sexism”, says co-founder Fanny Schorr.

“We played our accordion to introduce a theatrical scene, then joined hands and started singing. The public was always shocked, but became more and more interested“, her colleague Anna Will explains. The two girls saw in the Egyptians’ interest as a great chance to broach other subjects, and started giving workshops on street theater that focused on non-violence.

The team is now looking for organizations or groups interested in holding workshops on non-violent conflict resolution.
