No More Hunger: Making Her Mother’s Dream Come True

“There is no shame in being hungry,” affirms HRH Princess Haya Bint Al-Hussein. Rather, responsibility lies with those who can help to feed the poor and hungry while preserving their dignity.

That’s why the NGO she started, Tkiyet Um Ali, aims to feed to feed 20,000 poor families each month by December this year. It does not provide financial support, but instead converts financial donations into food. Through its Takaya Al-Khair program, participating supermarkets facilitate needy people’s access to food and other specific needs via electronic vouchers.

Princess Haya launched the NGO in 2003, in memory of her late mother, Queen Alia, to fulfill her dream of reaching out to the hungry in Jordan. Tkiyet Um Ali seeks to realize a Jordan free of hunger by 2015 by providing sustainable food assistance to families living below the poverty and hunger line. Aid programs include the distribution of monthly food packages containing 22 nutritional essentials, “feeding passersby” which feeds 300 people every day at the group’s Mahata headquarters, and the Adahi Meat program.

We can no longer afford to wait,” Princess Haya declares. “We must attack hunger wherever we find it.
