Medrar is an interactive platform for eclectic artists, musicians and the like to showcase, share and promote their work. Launched in 2005 in Egypt by Mohamed Allam with the support of the Young Arab Theater Fund, Foundation for Arts Initiatives and Culture Resource’s Abbara Program, the venue seeks to create dialogue among creative communities in the MENA region, and allow for these artists to develop their collective styles in a dynamic, stimulating setting.
While encouraging collaborations and the sharing of ideas and inspirations, Medrar connects institutions, critics and artists, bridging the gap between how we actively engage in the art world. Hosting a rich, diverse compendium of talented Arab artists, Medrar also goes behind the scenes into the worlds of these individuals, sharing that footage on their YouTube channel MedrarTV.
One of our favorite videos is the behind the scenes of Lebanese musician and producer Zeid Hamdan’s underground music production initiative in Beirut called Lebanese Underground. Often ascribed as being the driving influence behind the electronic Arab pop movement in the 1990s, Zeid has founded and produced music for some of the most influential modern Arab music groups, like The New Government, Katibe5, Kazamada and Soap Kills, to name a few.
Medrar seeks to unite and inspire through various mediums, and harvest insight into all the diverse talents blooming in the region.
