Enlivening the Past: Jordan Heritage Revival Company Brings Historic Edge to Tourism

From expansive canyons and waterfalls like Wadi Mujib, to the legendary ancient city of Petra, Jordan is no stranger to adventure tourism. Although the country has become a stand-out in the region for exploration tours, the history surrounding many of the popular areas is not well-known. In 2010, the King Abdullah II Fund for Development (KAFD) founded the Jordan Heritage Revival Company (JHRC) as a way of exploring a new breed of tourism. Now run by the Challenger Team, JHRC hopes to resuscitate the historical heritage in tourist hot spots like Wadi Rum and Petra, and not-so-common spots like Al-Shobak.

A key component of the program is the historical re-enactment; from the costumes and props to the historical facts, the crew ensures this is as authentic an experience as possible. Giving tourists and locals alike a renewed interest at some of Jordan’s most awe-inspiring sights, this is a new variety of tourism. The Al-Shobak/Wadi Rum trip also includes an antique train-ride and an unanticipated battle re-enactment, right in the heart of the caramel-coloured valley of Wadi Rum.
