Finally–Some Relief For Hungry Yarmouk

Like fruits and vegetables in your diet? In Yarmouk, forget about it: residents of the besieged camp in southern Damascus have been reduced in recent months to eating grasses. “The only food we get comes in aid boxes,” a resident named Wassim told BarakaBits. The good news is that last week, more emergency aid was finally brought through, thanks to the brave members of the Jafra Foundation who distributed them, and its partner, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, which is providing “as much food as possible to those in need, regardless of religious, national or political motivation,” the PCRF announced on May 28.

This latest distribution amounts to tens of thousands of dollars of food staples, which alleviates at least the immediate needs of many families. Khaled, another Yarmouk resident, says that he’s now able to eat three meals a day, “but we are still scared that something [bad] will happen and we’ll go back to the first [starvation] stage.” Because of this fear, he added, families are trying to stockpile some of the food for “black days” ahead. Come what may, Jafra and the PCRF are both committed to providing as much as they can to support Yarmouk’s perseverance.
