Shams: Building a Community for Action

In Jordan, Shams Community is a youth leadership community that trains and empowers young people by giving them practical educational experience and the opportunities to bring a positive change to society. An evolution of Irbid Youth Volunteers, a network of students from Irbid University in Jordan, Shams became a group of students from around the country, harvesting their energy and creativity to improve the overall community through development challenges put into action. The university students who get involved with Shams learn invaluable leadership skills through community interaction, and become empowered to develop themselves and their communities. Through self-improvement activities and team-based learning tools, Shams gives these young adults the skills and guidance necessary to becoming positive young leaders in their societies.

Broken up into teams, Shams has the groups choose one societal problem they would like to focus on, and then work on active, innovative ways at tackling them. The Shams community knows that the Arab world indeed faces a variety of serious developmental challenges, and that empowering and developing young passionate leaders is crucial in solving those.
