Watch This Sea Turtle Undergo Surgery … at the Dentist

Last week, Australian Goldfish “George” made headlines globally as he went under surgery for a brain tumor in Melbourne. In Egypt, endangered sea turtles also go under the knife, but at the dentist (even though they have no teeth!).

That was the case of Madtoura, a sea turtle operated on by a dentist to remove a fishing hook that was putting her life in danger. I-Dive‘s Turtle Rescue Team, a group of professional divers and volunteers who run environmental projects such as the Underwater Museumtook care of the turtle, which had been found at Port Said with a large hook coming out through her eye.

“Mohamed Ismail, leader of the Portsaid Turtle Rescue team reported the case and he had to take her to Cairo, as we couldn’t manage the case out there,” says I-Dive Tribe’s co-founder Abd El Rahman El Mekkawi. “She had an antibiotic treatment, and after a week she was released into the sea again,” he said.
