“Weaving For A Brighter Future”: Carpets with a Cause

The Fatema Bint Mohammed Bin Zayed Initiative, in collaboration with internationally renowned designer Norma Kamali, has launched an exhibition in Abu Dhabi of twelve hand-made carpets, designed to draw focus to the plight of Afghan women, while empowering them for a sustainable future. The goal is to provide women in Afghanistan with employment in the carpet production process, an industry they already possess skills in. In fact, FBMI currently employs over 4,000 low income Afghans; over 70% of them are women and 35% of them are widows. This collection of exquisitely handcrafted carpets of traditional and contemporary designs represents a beautiful intersection of commercial branding and global awareness. Norma Kamali is not only lauded for her innovative approach to fashion-with celebrities like Madonna, Cher, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga having worn her designs — she is also among the few high profile fashion designers who focus on women empowerment and community building. “Weaving For A Brighter Future” is now on display at The Galleria, Al Maryah Island until October 31.
