Amal Women’s Center: Building a Center of Empowerment

Dedicated to providing a platform for women who struggle financially with a means to use their skills for work, the Amal Women’s Training Center and Moroccan Restaurant is dedicated to the empowerment of disadvantaged women. By training these women to cook and prepare traditional and modern Moroccan cuisine, offering literacy workshops in addition to other training courses, the Center seeks to give these women an outlet to build friendships, develop their skills and be productive members in their communities. Ultimately, the Center hopes to transform these women and build further economic stability in the country.

Founded in 2012 by an American named Nora Fitzgerald, who grew up in Morocco, the Amal Women’s Center sought to be the answer to women who were widowed, divorced or single mothers, those with little to no education, and orphans. Nora saw a gap that left many of these women without a means to provide for themselves and their families, and the Amal Women Center became the answer for that. Run now by a board of directors who work on a volunteer basis, the center hopes to encourage trainees to learn real, marketable skills. The Center also now runs a restaurant that serves an average of 60 people per day.

By building a community of volunteers, interns, locals and expats, the Amal Center has become a beacon of hope, empowerment and growth for disadvantaged women in Morocco. And that’s #PeopleHelpingPeople.
