7 Powerful Photos of Iran’s Symmetrical Mosques

Kaleidoscopically perfect interiors, stunning mosaics, and some of the world’s most refined architecture: this young Iranian photographer captured in pictures the beautiful Iran not many can afford to see.

The author, Mohammad Reza Domri Ganji, a 23-year-old physics student from Babol in northern Iran, taught himself the art of landscape photography and traveled across the country taking high quality photos of mosque interiors, where professional photography and using a tripod is often banned. “Most of the time I had to take care of lots of paperwork, spending several days just to get official permission,” he says.

Taken in Isfahan, Shiraz and Yazd, his powerful photos of Iran focus on grand mosques, historical bathhouses and other popular monuments, such as the Aliqapu palace in Isfahan. The young photographer hopes his pictures reach out to people so that they can experience some of the beauty of his country. “I am also interested in photographing Jewish and Christian holy sites,” Ganji says.
