My Light Is Your Light: The Story of Syrians’ Struggles Told Through Light Figures

Palestinian-Lebanese artist Alaa Minawi tells the story of Syrian refugees through his project My Light is your Light, which he will share with the world at the 3rd Amsterdam Light Festival. His work will be on display from November 27 until January 18. Alaa’s idea was one of 30 chosen from a sum of 360 submissions from artists from all around the world.

“When people leave their cities against their will, they don’t just leave houses, friendships, toys, and valuable belongings; they lose their skin and limbs fall apart and fades in the memories, they become lines. Lines of light,” says Alaa, as he describes his installation.

The project is made of six neon light figures, resembling a displaced family. For years, the family has been walking and it appears that the youngest member has spotted something, something that could reflect hope and cruelty at the same time.
