Six very talented female poets shared the stage at the Kempinski Hotel in Amman on December 20 to support Hopes for Women in Education, a non-profit, volunteer-based NGO that provides higher education scholarships to underprivileged refugee women in Jordan.
The poets included Aysha El-Shamayleh, an award-winning spoken word artist, and Dana Dajani, an award-winning Palestinian actress and writer. Noora Sharrab, Hopes’ co-founder, also performed as well as Rawan Risheq, Deema Dee and Josiane Smith. Many of the poems, all beautifully delivered, centered around education and Palestine. Both themes are relevant to the organization and project that this event’s proceeds will go to Hopes for Women in Education and Sitti Soap, a social entrepreneurship project that aims to provide skilled women at the Gaza refugee camp in Jerash, Jordan with employment opportunities.
With the help and support of Hopes for Women in Education, ten students have graduated and earned university and college degrees. What sets Hopes apart from similar organizations is that their support is not only financial. The students have training sessions and monthly book club meetings as well as internship opportunities. Hopes for Women is just that; it gives women hope that tomorrow will indeed be better than today.
