The Real Reason Spiderman Appeared in Cairo

A mysterious Spiderman pushing through microbuses, dodging Tuk Tuks to the sound of strident Shaaby songs, or walking upstream to a hurried crowd in Cairo’s Bolak. Last Monday, a series of photographs went viral and captivated Egyptian’s eyes, as a enigmatic man dressed as the superhero jumped around the city’s rooftops.

As amusing as the pictures can be, the photographer’s scope was no joke. Shot across the streets of Cairo’s Downtown, Bolak El-Dakrour, and El-Sayeda Zeinab, the images shed light on the hardships of Egyptian daily life, a struggle even for superheroes like Spiderman, says the photographer, Hossam Atef.

“Spiderman himself can’t even handle a single push in the Microbus, little school boys attitude or the stinky sweat smell at the underground (in the metro),” says Atef, who runs Antikka Photography. “And just because no other people on earth can handle what we are facing every day, a guy like Spiderman was mugged,” he adds with irony.
