They say Moroccans share a superstitious belief according to which a photo can steal a part of our souls. Beirut-based photographer Leila Alaoui managed to cross this imaginary line and capture the beauty of Morocco’s diversity in pictures.
Inspired by Robert Frank’s The Americans, Alaoui shot these pictures during a road trip across Morocco, where she photographed men, women and children within diverse ethnic and tribal groups. “Historically, Moroccans have too often been represented from the exotic and sometimes “orientalist” point of view of western photographers. My motivation was to re-visit the portrait practice and show Morocco in a way that I consider more natural, though no less objective, through the eyes of a native Moroccan,” she says.
