Cairo Exhibit ‘Fantasy’ Escapes the World of Reality in a Fascinating Way

“The world of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless,” said Jean-Jacques Rousseau. But for Egyptian artists Eman Abdelbakey and Lamia Mokhtar Khattab, both worlds can come together –in a single painting.

The painters are presenting Fantasy, an exhibition that explores the intersections where the limits between reality and imagination blur, in a sophisticated attempt to escape the mundane, sometimes sorrowful, reality. “By taking scenes from real life, such as people, forests and rivers, and using unconventional colous, we take them out of the world of reality and place them in the dream world,” says Abdelbakey.

Inspired by artistic movements such as impressionism and cubism, the duo combines their painting techniques with unconventional pallets to transfer the images from the real world into the world of reverie. “I’ve personally put a lot of my emotions and worked out a lot of issues through these paintings and I see a different story in each one,” she tells BarakaBits

The exhibition present its opening night on Friday February 6, at 7:00 pm and will run for two weeks at Art Cafe, in Cairo’s Maadi.
