Medicine Is an Expensive Business All Over the World. Except In the Country You Would Least Expect.

A winner of the 2014 MIT Enterprise Forum Arab Startup Competition and a pioneer medical social business, SudaMed runs the only free healthcare clinic in the city you would least expect: Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. “We believe that healthcare, education and job opportunities are a right of every human being, in Sudan and abroad,” says its founder and CEO, Dr. Mazin Mohammed Khalil.

In a country where there are only three doctors for every 10,000 people, health care is a costly business: only a third of the population has access to health insurance, according to SOS’ Children statistics. Aiming to improve accessibility and connect doctors with patients across the country, the social enterprise created an online medical directory to digitize the health care system.

Perhaps its most impactful took is the SudaMed Wafir, a medical discount card for small businesses and families that provides up to 50 % discount on all services for patients. SudaMed has also set up a primary school and runs a youth empowerment program, in an attempt to train youth to develop their entrepreneurship skills.
