Handover’s Promise to Build Houses With Only Earth Materials Is Crowdfunding

Last October, we interviewed Radwa Rostom, the woman creating alternative housing solutions in Cairo slums through her project Handover. The civil engineer and her team are now launching an online crowdfunding campaign to fund the first prototype for a housing unit made of earth materials in Cairo.

The initiative is a sub-project from Ezbet project, a comprehensive program which includes different sub-projects to serve the urban and community development aims in the informal settlement of Ezbet Abu-Qarn on an inclusive scale.

The program, which aims to empower architecture and civil engineering students together with slum residents to build sustainable houses, runs in cooperation with Alashanek Ya Balady for Sustainable Development, the Urban Planning and Design Department (UPDD) at the Ain Shams University, and the Urban Planning and Design Institute (SI- Städtebau Institut- Lehrstuhl Prof. Dr. Helmut Bott, Stuttgart University).
