Jordanian Artist Mona Saudi Makes Lasting Art from Stone

Starting May 25, renowned Jordanian sculptor and artist Mona Saudi’s work will be on display for the first time in Dubai at the Lawrie Shabibi Gallery. The collection, entitled Poetry in Stone, consists of seven sculptures the artist created from 2003 to 2012 along with a series of seven silkscreen prints made from drawings between 1976 and 1980. These visually stunning pieces were inspired by the writings of the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.

The artist uses stone as her primary medium. Mona completed her first sculpture, entitled Mother/Earth, in 1965. Primarily inspired by themes of growth and fertility, Mona creates pieces that are romantic, contemporary commentary on the cycle of life. Mostly using natural stones that originate in the Middle East, like limestone and marble from Jordan or diorite from Syria, Mona creates stone sculptures that though not alive, tell stories, and speak of life, creation, growth and movement.

Mona’s work has been shown around the world in both solo and collective exhibitions, and is permanently on display in the National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman and at Darat al Funun. The exhibition runs until July 16. If you’re in Dubai, be sure not to miss it!
