Only 1 day before Ramadan this year, Malek Jandali, the Syrian pianist and composer, released “The Moonlight”; his latest symphonic works for piano and orchestra.
Based on one of the oldest songs in Islamic culture, Tala Al Badru Alayna, Jandali has regenerated a song that dates back more than 1,400 years, aiming to present the beauty and truth of the rich Islamic culture.
When we asked about the inspiration behind his latest release, Malek Jandali said “The stories of people and the loss of beautiful memories and ancient mosques and churches in my homeland Syria inspired me to compose this piece to share the true message of Islam of enlightenment and social justice through a symphony of peace and harmony.” Composed to reflect the beauty and inclusiveness of the song’s lyrics, a message that is still alive and performed in ceremonies throughout the world. “The message of beauty and hope during the time of violence and destruction needs a symphony of peace with the true meaning of Islam.” He added.
In orchestrating this ancient melody, Malek Jandali implemented the symphony orchestra and academic musical theories such as harmony and counterpoint to bridge the divide between the east and the west. As a transitional artist, Jandali presents contemporary counterpoint at its best. The Moonlight was performed and recorded in Moscow with a 70 piece symphony orchestra, The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Sergey Kondrashev.
Mr. Jandali composed, orchestrated and performed the work on piano in a cinematic short film that he produced also titled The Moonlight. The film was produced in the US, using the latest state-of the-arts graphic design and technology and was directed by award-winning filmmaker Eric Haviv. Music students and children from various schools participated in the production of the film to give the suffering Syrian children a voice through the soft power of art and music.
