Sharjah Researchers Design First Hydrogen Cell UAV in GCC

In an attempt that’s first of its kind in the region, a team of researchers and senior students from the American University of Sharjah designed the first hydrogen fuel cell powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the UAE and the GCC region. The experiment was conducted in Hamiryah in Sharjah, where the vehicle cruised for 10 minutes at a steady speed.

The use of fuel cells that allow long endurance and the fact that the project was designed and built by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at AUS from the scratch, make this project a significant contribution to research in the fields of electric propulsion aircrafts and long endurance UAVs.

“The team was led by Dr. Mohamed Gadalla, Professor of Mechanical Engineering; and comprised Sayem Zafar, Lab Instructor, Mechanical Engineering; John Mempin, pilot; as well as senior undergraduate students.”
