Shab-e Yalda: a night of red and poetry

Happy Shab-e Yalda to all those who celebrate! Yalda is the night of the winter solstice, and is celebrated with a big feast in Iran and by Persian communities around the world.

Symbolism is an important part of Persian celebrations, and Yalda is no different! The color red is particularly important during this night, representing the glow of life. The color is embodied in red fruits such as pomegranates and watermelons – all bought in masses to be eaten on the eve of Shab-e Yalda. Poems by the famous Persian poet Hafez are also typically read out loud (sometimes for hours!) during this night.
