Qatar occupies first place as Most Peaceful Country in the MENA Region

It may come as a surprise to hear of a Middle Eastern country be ranked as one of the 50 most peaceful countries in the world. This year, Qatar comes in first place as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa. According to the 2016 Global Peace Index, an index which measures the relative peacefulness of nations, Qatar came in at No. 34 globally with a 1.716 overall score. With this score, Qatar was able to retain its place as the most peaceful country in a region that unfortunately has been experiencing anything but peace.

So how did Qatar score so well? The Global Peace Index, which covers 163 countries worldwide, takes things like the level of safety and security in the society, the extent of domestic or international conflict and the degree of military preparation into consideration to rank countries. With the stability of its political and economic system, Qatar was able to hold a leading position in the MENA region.

In the MENA region, Qatar is followed by Kuwait, which comes in at No. 51 globally, then the United Arab Emirates, which ranks as No. 61 globally.

The results of this year’s Global Peace Index reveals that Qatar enjoys moderate peacefulness within its borders and stands as the most peaceful country in the MENA region. In the years to come, we hope to see the rest of the MENA region- particularly countries, such as Syria, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen, which have been torn by war and conflict- rank among the most peaceful countries in the world.
