12 Ancient Egyptian Inventions You May Still Use Today!

Till this day, many things found in the surroundings of our daily lives date back to ancient history. We all can agree that Arabs have played a major role in developing pretty much every ancient invention! Check out these 12 Egyptian inventions that date back to the time of the Pharaohs, and that you may still be using today!

1. Eyeliner (Kohl): Yeah, that’s right! Ancient Egyptian sculptures and images that date back to nearly 5000 B.C. show that the Egyptians invented that beautiful eye art!
2. High Heels: The first image depicting Egyptians in heels dates back to around 3500 B.C.. The nobles of both sexes would wear them to differentiate social status.
3. 365-day Calendar: The Egyptians used annual timing made up of 360 days, split into 12 months of 30 days. They added the other five days at around 4000 B.C. and even calculated the first leap year  in 238 B.C.
4. Paper: You probably learned in history class that the Egyptians began exporting the first form of stationary made from Papyrus leaves as an alternative to clay tablets around 1000 B.C
5. Plow: Egyptians used plows to increase production and make farming much easier on the banks of the Nile River at nearly 2500 B.C.
6. Breath Mints: Due to the poor dental condition of most Egyptians, they created small pellets of gum made out of cinnamon, honey, gum and tree bark.
7. Shaving and Hair Care: Before the Romans invaded Egypt, the Egyptians used to believe that shaving all the hair on their body is a sign of cleanliness. Then the Romans instilled the belief that hair is actually a sign of manliness.
8. Doorlocks: The Egyptians doorlocks were more developed than those invented by the Romans later on.
9. Toothbrushes and Toothpaste: To improve dental condition, the Egyptians created toothbrushes from hay and toothpaste from a mix of egg shells and oxen hooves. Sounds pretty strange, right?
10. Pens and Ink: Not only did they invent paper, they were also the first to use pens made of sugar cane and black ink as a writing utensil.
11. Wigs: Egyptians of both genders used wigs as a form of fashion or simply to cover a bald spot. They would make them out of human hair initially and then later from palm fibre.
12. Hieroglyphics: This is the first form of lettering system invented by the Egyptians at nearly 3200 B.C. and it was made up of around 500 letters and symbols!
