Hijarbie: The Latest Fashion Icon in the Islamic World

Recently, the Barbie doll community has become one of diversity, where Barbies are now made to look like real, everyday women in all their variations. Well, one Muslim woman felt the need to have a Barbie doll to represent the Hijabi women in the world, and she named her Hijarbie, thus making her the latest fashion icon in the Islamic world! Nigerian medical scientist and fashion enthusiast, Haneefah Adam, decided to hand cut and sew modest clothing to dress this Barbie doll, and make her a modest Muslima.

24-year-old Haneefah told Buzzfeed that she wants to, “inspire the Muslim girl. It’s about having a doll that looks like her, that represents her own cultural and religious background”, and this Hijarbie is doing just that! Haneefah believes that Hijab means modesty, and modesty can be found in colorful, fashionable and conservative clothing. She even made a doll in honor of the inspiring Muslim hijabi Ibtihaj Muhammad who participated and won a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics!

Her Barbie doll is seen on Instagram dressed in Haneefah’s own designs, designed to fit on the doll as if it were life-size. Her Instagram followers are increasing daily, as more and more people are being introduced to this real-life Hijabi doll. Hijarbie is a doll that all Hijabi’s can relate to, and this is what Haneefa is aiming for.

“At the end of the day, it will create a sense of value and will be inspiring them to be more confident, more driven, to believe more in themselves which leads to an appreciation of herself and her modest lifestyle and upbringing.” (buzzfeed.com)
